The Movie Precious
Okay, I see this movie won awards and that “people” liked this movie so I thought I would read the book before seeing the movie since the book is always better than the movie.
I am HORRIFIED!!!! Now I am only on page 41 out of 181 but so far I want to throw up, cry out huge sobs, scream and throw the book across the room. But, it’s on my electronic reader so I will NOT throw it across the room.
I have no idea who would think this would make a good movie. There is NO WAY I would want to see what I am reading on the big screen. I am now stuck with the images I have for life let alone see them in full color! I am shaken to my core just reading this book.
I don’t read fiction, in fact I can’t remember the last time I did. I LOVE reading about people’s lives. So far this summer I have read “Loose Girl” by Kerry Cohen,
“Color Me Butterfly” by L.Y. Marlow,
and now “Push” by Sapphire , which is what the movie “Precious” is based on.
Ever since I was 19 I have been reading the magazine “True Story”,
I just LOVE people’s stories and I just can’t get enough. In fact, my favorite Podcast is “The Moth”
and wouldn’t you know, that is just where real people get up on stage and tell their story! LOL!! In fact, yesterday I found out that “The Moth” is coming to Pittsburgh on August 26th so Chuck and I are going to go! YEAH!! We are both excited!

Oh one more! I forgot!!
Rabbit-Proof Fence by Doris Pilkington. I never read the book, but I saw the movie and it was really good.
I agree with your sister. That was a very good movie. Even the kids liked ( lack of better word considering the content) it.
Oh, I completely agree with you about preferring to read non-fiction over fiction. Most people are the other way around. I do keep trying fiction books, because good non-fiction is sparse in the libraries I go to. I find most of the non-fiction bibliographies are about actors or politicians, which is just lame. The last non-fiction books I’ve read were about people who survived some traumatic event. I found them very interesting, though I guess some people would never read such books. So here are some of my suggestions. Take them or leave them. You might not even be able to find them in electric form…who knows?
Between a Rock and a Hard Place by Aron Ralston. It was about the hiker who had a big rock land on his hand and he had to cut off his hand to escape his entrapment. VERY interesting insights as he was dying. He adds a lot of his other adventures which becomes excessive, imo, but you can skip all that and the rest is really good.
The Long Walk: The True Story of a Trek to Freedom by Slavomir Rawicz. Amazing, amazing story……….
A Jump for Life by Ruth Altbeker Cyprys. This book is about a holocaust survivor. She was never in one of those death camps, but what she saw and how she survived was amazing. The author saved her own life and that of her infant daughter by jumping from a moving train bound for Treblinka.
That’s all I have. I would read more of this type of book if I could find them. I have yet to check out Edinboro University library. I bet they would have a lot.
